Behavioral interview questions - what are they and how to answer them?

In order to do really well on your cabin crew interview, you need to be able to recognize and answer correctly one of the most popular questions among interviewers. They are so popular that you cannot hide from them. They are called: 'Behavioral Interview Questions'.

To make a good impression on the interviewer, you need to make sure that you have a 'success story' that highlights the exact qualities that particular airline is looking for and that you are ready to talk about it with a confidence.

What are these questions?
Behavioral interview questions are being asked by the interviewers in order to find out if you have the skills and required competencies needed for the cabin crew job. If they know how you dealt with a situation in the past, it will help to give them a sense of how you might perform in the future.
You need to prepare your answers that sound like stories always highlighting skills and qualities the airline is looking for.
The interviewer will be asking you to give a specific example from your own experience that has already happened. Something you have done in the PAST. These questions are different from the ones where you were being asked to imagine and speculate on what would you do in a given situation.

How do I recognize them?
There are many different types of interview questions, and behavioral questions are just one type, so how do you recognize them? How do you know if it's a behavioral question?
The best way is to look for keywords. Very often behavioral questions start with the following phrases:

'Tell me about a time ...'
'Give me an example of how you ...'
'Describe a time when you ...'
'Have you ever ...'

Once you hear these type of questions you know it's time for a great success story!

The following are behavioral question examples:

'Tell me about a time, when you worked effectively under pressure.'
'Tell me about a time when you disagree with your co-worker.'
'Tell me about a time when you helped someone.'

'Give me an example of how you worked on a team.'
'Give me an example of when you showed leadership.'
'Give me an example of how you dealt with a challenging situation.'

'Describe a time when you had to deal with an upset customer.'
'Describe a time when you disagreed with a rule or approach.'
'Describe a time when you had to make a big change.'

'Have you ever made a mistake? How did you handle it? What did you do?'
'Have you ever had difficulties working with somebody? How did you handle it? What did you do?'
'Have you ever had a conflict with a customer? How did you handle it? What did you do?'

You might notice a difference between the last 3 questions and the rest. The last 3 questions are asked in present perfect tense, however, there is a follow-up question: 'How DID you handle it? and 'What DID you do?'. The keyword here is 'did', past tense. So make sure your answer is in the past.

How do I answer these questions?
Competency questions are not difficult to answer. As mentioned above, you need to tell a success story. The best way how to tell a story is using STAR technique.

Situation
Task
Action
Result

By using this technique, you will describe the relevant past working experience.

Cabin crew job has a list of qualities and requirements. The behavioral questions are used to find out if you possess these qualities.

Wish you the best of luck!
